MTN is planning to launch its own branded Android smartphone in South Africa this 2014. Named “Steppa”, it is an affordable high performance smartphone with 3G connectivity and dual SIM capabilities. MTN described the Steppa as the “most affordable high performance smartphone ever”.
The MTN Steppa smartphone sports a 3.5-inch touch screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 1GHz single-core CPU, and a 2.0 MP AF Camera with Video recorder. The device runs Android 2.3.5 (Ginger Bread), which has been modified to include various MTN specific enhancements.
The Steppa is not an iPhone. It’s not a Samsung Galaxy. It’s not meant to be but it offers 3G (a big deal) and Opera Mini, Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Google Talk, Facebook, Twitter, News24 and WhatsApp are pre-loaded on the device.
